Split Stone

Sometimes naturally formed, other times man-made, these rock features were used as “portals” so the Ancestors could join our world and return to theirs. 

These rock features are typically a large rock or boulder that has a “split” near the middle of the stone.  My research has shown that these rock structures are usually found in the older sites that date from the Archaic period to the Pleistocene period. 

I have also learned that some Split Stone structures have been found to have smaller stones that are “plugging” the center split in the rocks.  Since not all Spirits that enter our world have good intentions, if the tribe’s Medicine Man/Woman felt that a malevolent spirit had caused calamity within the tribe, they would “plug” the split hole, thereby blocking evil Spirits from causing further harm.
