Altar Rocks – Can be natural or man-made rock structures used as a place to pray to the Creator, or to leave “tribute” or gifts to the Creator.
Some rocks or boulders were dedicated for the sole purpose of being an altar only, while some other rock features such as large stone burial mounds, platform structures, base stone cairns and serpent walls all may have a small altar incorporated into the body of the structures.
Some altars received tribute such as sage, tobacco, cedar bows, etc., While others I have located have small carved stone animal effigies left in situ.
Maasaw – Carefully removing debris from altar rocks.
