Talala

Perched on a steep mountain hillside, the ancient Native American site of Talala (meaning woodpecker) is a sacred burial ground overlooking a vibrant village site nestled beside a flowing river below. This hallowed ground is home to approximately sixty stone mound burials, each meticulously constructed to honor the departed.

The discovery of several stone tools scattered among the mounds speaks to the daily lives and skilled craftsmanship of the community that once thrived in the valley below. The site’s elevated vantage point, with its sweeping views of the river and village, suggests a deep spiritual connection between the living, their ancestors, and the natural world, making Talala a poignant testament to their enduring legacy and reverence for the land.
