Mastodon Pictograph Site

While hiking along the Potomac River, Bear Spirit Founder, Massaw, discovered a stunning ancient Native American pictograph on a large boulder that rests among bedrock on a cliff overlooking a scenic walking trail above the river’s glistening waters. The pictograph portrays a mastodon in mid-stride. Created over 10,000 years ago (before the mastodon’s extinction), this serves as a rare and profound connection to an era when these colossal creatures roamed the earth, their presence deeply woven into the spiritual and cultural life of the people who depicted them.
