Ceremonial Structures
These rock features were typically placed inside a burial ground site. They served to honor the deceased Ancestors as they were placed next to the burial mounds. Rock features such as Serpent walls, ceremonial circles, platform structures, and rock art images, including petroglyphs, pictographs, and outline glyphs, are often found either on or next to Ceremonial Structures. We have also found many ground serpent effigies, niche or split stones, etc., next to these Ceremonial Structures. Occasionally, I have seen a Ceremonial Structure that is outside of a burial ground.
