Serpent Ground Effigy

Serpent Ground EffigyThese rock formations resemble serpent walls, with one significant difference.  They were created on the surface of the ground only.  There was no stacking to create multiple levels of stones, as you see in serpent walls.

Some of these serpent ground effigies are several feet wide. They can be as long as several hundred yards.

Like their cousins, the serpent wall, they were sometimes used to point to winter/summer directions.  They were also used to sending a warning to people travelling through that this is sacred ground.

All the serpent effigies I discovered were visually created, featuring a serpent in a serpentine, moving motion.

You will find these rock features typically around burial grounds.  Some ground serpent effigies can have a rattle chamber at the end of the tail, giving more evidence to the venomous snake effigy, much like a serpent wall.  They can also have either an oval-shaped head or a triangular one.
