Platform Structures

Platform and Base Stone Cairn structures are the Eastern Woodland Indigenous cultures’ version of a wood-carved totem pole, like those found in the Northwestern Indigenous cultures of the United States & Canada. They both serve as a ceremonial feature and are created to honor the Ancestors and animals that we share the forests and mountains with.

These rock features were created in a very similar way to the Base Stone Cairn.  The difference is that there was no large base boulder.  These rocks were stacked on top of each other from the ground up.  These rock structures were usually in a square or rectangular shape.  Although they are ceremonial in nature, I have occasionally found that they are not included within the burial grounds.
