Amissville

Amissville, nestled in the rolling hills of Virginia, is home to a significant Woodland Period burial ground, where approximately 30 Native American stone mound burials have been identified. This sacred site offers a powerful glimpse into the lives and traditions of Indigenous communities who lived here over a thousand years ago. The mounds, carefully constructed from local stone, reflect a deep spiritual connection to the land and an enduring respect for the ancestors laid to rest there.

Scattered among the mounds, the Bear Spirit Team has discovered several finely crafted stone tools and arrowheads, many made from striking white quartz—a material highly valued for both its beauty and utility. These artifacts suggest a people skilled in tool-making and intimately familiar with their environment. Today, the Amissville site stands not only as a place of archaeological interest but also as a solemn reminder of the cultural richness and spiritual traditions of Virginia’s first peoples.
