Earthen Mound
This earthen mound measures 206′ long, 60 feet wide, and 40 feet high. Faces northwest to southeast, and has a ground serpent effigy that wraps around the entirety of the mound.
In the NW section near the base of the mound is a set of “niche stones.” These were built to act as a “portal” for the Ancestors buried there to enter our world and return to theirs.
This mound is composed mainly of crushed stone due to the fact that it was built on top of a rocky mountain top that has little soil, but plenty of sandstone. This sandstone had to first be quarried from large sandstone rock formations, then broken down into small pieces that would fit into a basket. The crushed rocks were then carried one basket at a time to create this mound over many generations. There is an estimated 54 tons of material used to create this earthen mound.
